Orosi Coffee – Growing Region

Orosi is one of the oldest communities in Costa Rica. The Colonial Church, in use since 1743, stands out among it treasures. The town of Orosi is located in a valley in the central plateau, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital. It has an area of 315 km² (122 miles²).

The coffee growing tradition is more than 100 years old. It is the means by which the community has economically developed. The fertile soils of the Orosi Valley and its magnificent climatic conditions allow this region to produce a smooth coffee that offers a well balanced cup, with good acidity, body and aroma. Bean production is found distributed among the plain areas, as well as on the mountain sides.

Characteristics:

The highest points of the Orosi mountains are covered by forests protected by private natural reserves and National Parks. This is why the zone maintains its climatic characteristics, free of changes provoked by population growth and development.

In regards to the climate, Orosi and its surroundings are unique. The climate is influenced by both the Pacific and the Atlantic drainage basin. The rainy season is concentrated from May through November, the dry season from December to April. Annual precipitation exceeds 2,250 millimeters (89 inches) on an average of 210 days, thus classifying it as a rainy zone.
